Vegan Black Metal Chef

Today has been a good day. Primarily, this is because I just made some awesome vegan burritos. Also, tickets for wrosie and I came through to go and see Brian Cox do a talk on science next week. However, I’ve also discovered perhaps my favourite vegan cooking video of all time as well.

The Vegan Black Metal Chef is probably my new favourite thing in the world. Forget Charlie Sheen, forget Rebecca Black. This dude deserves to go viral, and he’s representing veganism whilst doing it so let’s make it happen!

In the video, the Vegan Black Metal Chef cooks a Vegangstaz favourite: Pad Thai. As you may know, wrosie posted an awesome vegan pad thai recipe about a month ago, and very little could beat her delicious and simple recipe, so check that out! However, VBMC gets pretty close to this, partly due to his hilarious vocals accompanying the recipe in the video.

Hearing the lyrics ‘then we must press the water out of the tofu, then cut the tofu in half’ growled in a black metal style whilst some tofu is sliced with a sword over some stereotypical black metal intrumentals is probably the most fun you’ll ever have watching a cooking video. Oh and the VBMC himself is of course donning corpse paint and armour. Probably my favourite bit is towards the end. Instead of cooking you have to summon the power of Satan. “You are missing one ingredient. That is of course the heat of Sataaaan! You must summon the dark ones into your dish by any means possible.” Amazing.

This video is causing quite a stir on the internet already, and it’s only been up for a couple of days. Let’s hope this actually does go viral. In fact, scratch that, I hope the Vegan Black Metal Chef gets his own show. Screw Jamie Oliver, Gordon Ramsay etc. etc. This is the kind of cooking show I would actually watch!

Song a Day – Vegan Myths Debunked

If you’ve never heard of Jonathan Mann before, he’s been working for nearly 3 years by producing a song everyday, and posting it on Youtube. You’ve got some short ones, some fairly long, often varying in style and always varying on topic. A few days ago he posted song number 810 – a duet with Ivory King entitled Vegan Myths Debunked. In the song, Jonathan asks the usual confused questions about staying healthy on a vegan diet and what would happen to the animals if everyone went vegan, whilst Ivory, the vegan, explains away all those difficulties. The song is amusing, particularly to anyone who’s vegan as these questions with undoubtedly be very familiar. Check out the song below!

LYRICS:

Hey Ivory!
Yeah Jonathan?
You’re Vegan, right?
Yes, that’s right, I am!
Can I ask you some questions, then?
Sure, Mann, of course you can!
Are you ready for the questions, then?
What are you waiting for?

Where do you get your protein, protein, protein
Only meat has protein so where do you get your protein

Actually lots of things have protein: Beans have protein
Greens have protein, fruits and nuts have protein, grains and seeds have protein
and here’s the thing that’s so obscene:
We don’t need so much protein
Most people eat more than they need

Where do you get your calcium? Only milk has calcium
Healthy bones from cow’s milk, calcium, I drink it, yum

Lots of plants have calcium, and lots and lots of calcium
And cholesterol, well they have none of the fat found in milk

What about our ancestors? Didn’t they eat meat?
If I wasn’t supposed to eat it, then why do I have these teeth?

Do your teeth look like a carnivores? All sharp and pointy, like?
No you gotta cook your meat over a roaring fire light!
Furthermore, all carnivores act on instinct
Humans make choices, they consider and they think
If humans of old ate meat
It was a choice not a necessity

If everyone were vegan, what about all the cows
and all the gajillion chickens living on farms now?
If everyone turned vegan it wouldn’t happen over night
and demand would just decline and so would the supply.

Isn’t vegan food just bland and gross?
No! It’s yummier than most!
You care about animals more, you do!
I care about animals, people too!
Aren’t vegan men weak and girly?
I find vegan men quite sexy!
B12, so there, haha!
B12’s from bacteria!

Where do you get your protein? Plants!
Where do you get calcium? Plants!
Where do you get your iron? Plants!
Where do you get your zinc? Plants!

Hey Ivory!
Yeah Jonathan?
I think I get it now.
Yeah, it’s all about plants.
Yep, that’s pretty much it.
OK, cool, glad we cleared it up!
Me too! Let’s have a snack!
OK.

Vegucated

This morning I came across a pretty interesting premise for a documentary. The film is called Vegucated, and the premise is simple: take 3 New Yorkers who live on a diet of meat and cheese, and put them on the vegan path for 6 weeks. From the looks of the trailer (see the bottom of this post), the three of them are given a decent helping hand in terms of learning the ropes with stuff like staple foods and ethical considerations. It seems like the 6 weeks turn out to be a life changing experience, and the film focuses quite effectively on the major obstacle in the way of the growth of vegetarianism and veganism: ignorance.

The film is premiering this Spring, and whilst I wouldn’t expect a wide-release of any sort, I look forward to seeing the full thing whenever I get the chance. Props to the three volunteers who took part in the experiment as well, whether or not they stayed vegan by the end of it (guess we’ll find out when the film is released). I believe that trying out a vegan diet and understanding it is one of the most important steps that anyone can take, and there’s no denying that the transition can be hard at times.

Look out for Vegucated when it’s released in Spring, and stay tuned to Vegangstaz where I’ll be detailing a similar challenge for the veggie-curious in the near future!
